HPS History

HPS was founded in 1980 by John Connor and remains a family run school today.

Mr.  Connor started his teaching career at a large, state secondary school in Middleton, North Manchester in 1962 and taught across Trafford and Greater Manchester in various schools until 1977 when he was appointed Head in an independent co-educational school in Stockport for children from 3 to 18 years.

During this time, he learned about the importance of creating the right learning environment so that children from all backgrounds and of all abilities are able to flourish and he wanted to put this learning and experience into practice. 

He opened HPS in September 1980 with just 32 pupils, but numbers quickly grew due to his hard work and determination to build a welcoming and friendly school with a family atmosphere which also delivered the highest educational standards, with pupils enjoying small classes, specialist teaching and a wide curriculum.

He was and remains passionate about welcoming children without the need for entrance exams or assessment of any kind, knowing it is the responsibility of teachers, with support from parents, to help children maximise their potential.

The original principles of small classes with specialist teaching over 13 subjects and a wide range of extracurricular activities remain today. Examination results are outstanding, but more significantly the children continue to enjoy the welcoming and secure environment that a small, family-run school can offer.

The values of inclusivity and support are shared by all the staff, led by Mrs. Ruth Vayro the Head. And very importantly, they are protected by Mr. Connor’s four children who are now the owners: in fact, two of them, Mrs. Busby and Mr. Connor Jr both teach at the school whilst the other two take an active role in the business side. 

And of course, as School Principal, Mr. Connor Sr is always on hand to offer advice and share his experience.
