HPS History

HPS was founded in 1980 by John Connor and remains a family run school today.

Mr. Connor started his teaching career in 1962 at a large state secondary school in Middleton, North Manchester. He taught in various schools across Trafford and Greater Manchester until 1977 when he was appointed Head of an independent co-educational school in Stockport for children aged 3 to 18.

During this time, he learned about the importance of creating the right learning environment so that children from all backgrounds and abilities can flourish, and he wanted to put this learning and experience into practice.

He opened HPS in September 1980 with just 32 pupils. Still, numbers quickly grew due to his hard work and determination to build a welcoming and friendly school with a family atmosphere that also delivered the highest educational standards. Pupils enjoyed small classes, specialist teaching, and a broad curriculum.

He was and remains passionate about welcoming children without the need for entrance exams or assessment of any kind, knowing it is the responsibility of teachers, with support from parents, to help children maximise their potential.

The original principles of small classes, specialist teaching in 13 subjects, and a wide range of extracurricular activities remain today. Examination results are outstanding, but more significantly, the children continue to enjoy the welcoming and secure environment that a small, family-run school can offer.

All the staff, led by Mrs. Ruth Vayro, the Head, share the values of inclusivity and support. Very importantly, they are protected by Mr Connor’s four children, who are now the owners: two of them, Mrs Busby and Mr Connor Jr., both teach at the school, whilst the other two take an active role in the business side.

And, of course, Mr. Connor Sr. is always on hand to offer advice and share his experience.
